Lipid Lowering Drugs – Fibrates The fibric acid derivatives (fibrates) primarily affect VLDL metabolism, whereby VLDL input is reduced and removal is enhanced. Their major use therefore is for the treatment of hvpertriglyceridaemia, in which they also increase HDL levels. Probucol reduces LDL and HDL levels. It is also a powerful anti-oxidant and has been shown to inhibit lipoprotein oxidation and the extent of atherosclerosis in experimental animals. Its use as an anti-oxidant in man is, however, premature.
